Say something witty or get off the stage. I love a smart movie. I am talking about the kind of fun movie were you willingly rewind to catch a missed line.  It saddens me that I could not list hardly any modern movies as being smart. Yes I love Batman: Dark Knight & Iron Man, but that is not what I am talking about. Did movie dialog get dumber between 1950-2009? After my annoyance of the 2008 crappy remake of "The Woman" sucking I have decided to list my favorite witty movies. These movies have wonderful dialog and snappy comebacks.
I will list 5 more great movies next week when I post. Maybe then I can try for more recent films. Maybe

The Women (1939) Director: George Cukor. Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell. Dialog from & between everyone! EVERYONE! See this movie!

Auntie Mame (1958) Director: Morton DaCosta. Dialog from Rosalind Russell

His Girl Friday (1940) Director: Howard Hawks. Dialog from & between Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell & Ralph Bellamy

Footlight Parade (1933) Director: Lloyd Bacon. Dialog from & between James Cagney & Joan Blondell. She is amazingly snarky.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) Director: Gil Junger. Dialog between everyone. Even the side characters have something clever to say. Yes, I know this is a teen movie, but it is great fun to listen to.

Just saw "Moon" last week starring Sam Rockwell. It is an excellent Science Fiction movie! It is not a space western or an action special effect movie. This is all about story and plot lines. Kevin Spacey plays the voice of the computer :-)  For some reason the couple behind the 4 of us needed to discuss theories out loud...multiple times. Shut Up! Despite their thoughtlessness we all enjoyed the movie and recommend it to everyone.

No Spoilers. There is no secret that I like movies at the two opposite ends of the scale. Merchant / Ivory-type stuff and then things that blow up! Punisher: War Zone is insane. There was no doubt it would be over the top, since a friend recommended it to me. There is no long and annoying background explanation. The movie just starts and keeps on going!! Somewhere in the middle there is a 2-minute flashback of the Punisher with his happy family, but that is all. It was refreshing not to get a long drawn out scene. The big name movies should pay attention. When an audience has seen the first 2 or 3 movies, they do NOT want to see old news. Move On! One crazy scene was worth the price of the DVD. One of the 3 main Street Punks is jumping from one building to the next and something happens. It was so awesome that we rewound back to it twice! Yes, it was sick and wrong but hey, the Punisher...punishes.
I had recently watched Transporter 3. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jason Statham, but I was mildly disappointed with the film. It was the same ridiculous over the top action with a much handsomer star, but darn it Punisher: War Zone is just better! Heck I liked Death Race better than Transporter 3.
Punisher: War Zone is a must see. Buy it, Rent it, Borrow it!

No Spoilers. I enjoyed playing hookie to go see this movie. It was exactly what the commercials promised: a Father trying to get his daughter back. Liam Neeson plays a strict, over protective dad who is retired from a government job. Not a spy, but someone who can easily beat the snot out of anyone who gets in his way. Liam Neeson is divorced from Framke Jensen's character so the relationship is a little strained over their 10+ years of separation. Everything else is just as it should be. This is not Shakespeare or Rocket Science, just Run, Punch, Bang, Race, Owww! Not everyone will love this movie, but so what. Just let your mind escape as Mr Neeson puts a hurt on many many people.

No Spoilers. I liked The Spirit and I maybe one of a handful of people who did. However, my review this time is not about my enjoyment of the visually stunning flick, it is the dislike of the movie studio. The commercials that were run for this movie continually spouted about "300 & Sin City". That is nice and all, but this movie was nothing like those other 2 films. When I walked into the theater I expected to see a gritty, over the top, violent movie. Nope, Not It! The Spirit was a cross between Dick Tracy and a Warner Brothers cartoon. As the villain, Samuel L Jackson got to be Wile E Coyote and Bugsy Malone all at the same time. The movie was gorgeous, comical & witty. Sadly, most people came out of the theater unhappy and it was not the movies fault. It was the Studio and it's Advertising department who misrepresented the type of film it really was. Make sure you eventually see this film, just remember what it is truly like and everything will be great.

No Spoilers.
Yes, I am insane. I waited in line for the opening of a movie, a 12:01am movie. Anastasia picked me up around 5:15pm. The 5 of us had all purchased our tickets online, but the tickets were for 3 different theaters. Being ridiculously early helped out. We had time to turn in our tickets and switch them to the same space. Everyone in line was very friendly. Most of the people in line were chatting or reading a book. One guy had a guitar another had a Lightsaber. Being veterans of Comic-Con we know how to line up. We brought blankets, pillows & a chair. 2 of us held our space, while 2 of us went to Pat & Oscars to bring back a full dinner. The 5th person brought Starbucks. We were the envy of the lines. There were 4 lines for 6(?) theaters. I know they sold out of tickets 2 weeks ahead of time and then opened more theaters. At least 4 the south side theaters were full of Twilight fans. Chris called to mock me from our warm and toasty home while I was in line. He mentioned the fact that I still had 3 more hours to wait. HA! But even though the fog rolled in we were all warm, because we planned well.

The age ranged from 16-50, most were 20-25. No Tweens thank God. There were about 5 guys in our theater. 1 guy was obviously the Dad who had guard duty over the teenage girls (Good Dad!) 1 guy was obviously gay. 3 guys sat directly behind us. I'm pretty sure they had come with girlfriends, but I'm not toootally sure? The 3 guys were fun. The movie had been going along wonderfully. The whole audience was REALLY in to it. They were as silent as the grave. Then the entire audience practically wept when Edward showed up on the movie screen the first time. (Love Sick!) During the hushed silence of the first kiss in the movie, one of the 3 guys said, "Now That's What I'm Talking About". This caused everyone in our section to release the nervous pressure and start giggling like silly schoolgirls. I do not know how well this translates in written form, but I will remember it for quite a while.

It has been a while since I read a book and then saw the movie. Far too often the movie is only 25% of the book. Star Trek: Wraith of Khan started the movie several chapters in from the books beginning. Batman: Dark Knight is nothing like the graphic novel. The upcoming Punisher: War Machine may have little to do with the comic, I do not know yet? Twilight is very wordy. Fortunately the author, Stephenie Meyers had direct contact with the screenwriter. They did a good job of condensing lots of talking. If they had filmed the book shot per shot it would have been like a Merchant & Ivory movie. Lots o' talk, little action. For the action they fleshed out a few scenes dealing with the 3 "bad" Vampires, but they did not over do it or twist it out of context. All of the changes were minor. The Sheriffs friend died via Vampire rather than cancer. Let's face it, dead is dead. James bit Bella's hand in the book, but they switched it to her arm in the movie. Little stuff. I liked a lot of the things they did do. I loved Edward's skin in sunlight. They did everyone's eyes with various contact lenses, but the skin they really had to work at. One thing that I did notice was the lack of fangs. When I think back I do not remember the author ever mentioning fangs. People were definitely bitten in all 4 books, but it was always a half circle and a full mouth bite. I just did not think about it until I was faced with it on the big screen.

All in all the Twilight movie experience was great. You do not need to read the books to know what is going on so go see it. I intend to see it again if anyone wants to tag along. I suggest adults see the movie as late in the evening as possible to avoid the Tweens. Trust me.

Some of you may wonder why my book & movie reviews are never about anything serious? No autobiographical documentaries for me. I have a little too much reality in my life. I could not bear to hear one more "real" thing. I watch The Daily Show & The Colbert Report as my news source. The local news depresses me. So on that note, be prepared to see more books and movie reviews involving Superheroes, Super Soldiers, Carpathians, Vampires, Werewolves, Werecats, Dragons, Fae & Witches. Fantasy Island is where I wish to stay.

No spoilers. Before I give my review I have to make a slight snippy remake to other reviewers out there. When a person does not like Adam Sandler, they probably should NOT go to an Adam Sandler movie. Drama or comedy will not matter if you do not dig him...so please do not complain to the world about it.
I think Adam Sandler is a clever man. I love Happy Gilmore and Spanglish. Zohan is a crazy movie. It is a tree full of nuts & squirrels! I laughed so hard I almost peed! The 3 of us enjoyed it greatly. Go ahead and see it, you can pay full price!

I have seen worse DVD parody movies, sadly. There were some genuine laugh out loud moments in the film, but not enough. I am trying to decide if I would recommend this movie to other people...hmmm. Okay...yes, but only under limited circumstances. #1 The person must already like stupid movies. #2 The person should be in a goofy mood and finally #3 The person should consider chemical enhancement, like drinking. It will improve the film greatly. Maybe, 2 out of 5 stars, if that helps.

No spoilers. There have been several movies I enjoyed until the last few frames...Aliens 3, Gia and now Indiana Jones 4. In order to NOT tell you anything I will just say this...the last 5 minutes were fun. The last 15 minutes were annoying. I enjoyed all the actors and the parts they played. The action scenes were entertaining. It is a certain plot device at the end that I did not like. My willing suspension of disbelieve could only take me just so far. I was having so much fun and then it insulted my intelligence. I totally admit that despite the flaws the movie is worth watching. The whole group of us had fun.

I went to see Speed Racer with mixed feelings. One year ago when I heard about the live action version being made I was very skeptical. A few months ago I was very excited to see the finished product. Last week the reviews started droning on. I decided I did not care that the critics were out in full force, I Wanted to see it. On Monday night I fell in love with Speed Racer! It is so much fun. I really wish people would stop expecting Shakespeare when it is just a racing movie. I liked to original Japanese TV show, but let's be honest with ourselves...it was not that great. I loved it anyway. I know many people will complain about this movie, but there are others of us who truly enjoyed it. I saw it for full price and I intend to see it again on the big screen before it goes away. Take a chance on it and just GO!

I would like to thank Robert Downey Jr. for making a fantastic movie! The fact that its about a comic hero is just a big bonus. The Iron Man movie is just plain GREAT! I won't do a full review since the free world has seen this movie over the weekend. (Innocent Bystander fully reviewed it). Run to see this movie again. RUN!

Because I hated it so much I am posting my original blog text over to LJ.
Cloverfield Sucks (No Spoilers). Ned & I went to a completely sold out show. The 7:30 was packed so we went to the 8:10. I would love to tell you that I saw a great movie Monday night, but I cannot. I did not really see much of it at all. The movie was so jittery it was like viewing crack addicted Ferrets in search of their next fix. So many things happened that “required” the handycam to zip from one spot to another. I was woozie 5 minutes in! I stuck it out long enough to see the big monster and the first few others. I walked out immediately afterwards. I wobbled my way to the Customer Service desk and asked for some kind of refund. The woman took one look at me and my ticket and said, “Did You Vomit?” I assured her that I felt like it, but no. She went on to say that several people had thrown up! Any director who films his entire movie without a steady-cam is admitting that his movie is un-watchable. Which it was! So here’s to you Mister JJ Abrams! My personal pick for @$$#0!% of the Month!

You know me. You know the crap I sometimes watch. It was too tempting not to rent. I just saw Cougar Club. It is amusing and wrong. It was not as good as the American Pie movies, but it was much better than I expected. It would have to be, since I expected zilch. It did have a plot, so I cannot complain about that. I remember many a movie from the 70's & 80's that had a plot line so thin I could see through it. Sometimes I would rather watch a movie I expect to be bad than a movie I had high hopes for that crashed and burned. You should only rent this movie if you like stupidity & breasts.

The More the Merrier. Sometimes I like it light and fluffy! There is nothing deep going on here, just good clean amusement. It is a romantic comedy, but not in the current chick-flick sort of way. It is just relaxing & fun. They remade this movie in color later, but it is not as good as the original, even with the star power of Cary Grant. Rent it when you are in a bummed out mood to cheer you up. (Yes, Chris laughed)
Synopsis: During World War II, civil servant Connie (Jean Arthur) decides to turn the housing shortage in Washington, D.C., to her advantage. But when she rents out her four-room apartment to two men -- (Charles Coburn) and (Joel McCrea) -- Connie gets more than she bargained for.

I don’t usually want to see Dramas, so whenever possible I view a Dram-edy. If a filmmaker is going to make me cry she/he better make me laugh also. I watched, Why Did I Get Married the other night. I usually like Tyler Perry movies, but I think I love this one. Ned wandered by 1/2 of the way into the film and ended up watching it with me. It's good. Several movies have a pivotal "Bam" moment that changes the direction of the film. I saw some of it coming, but not like Tyler Perry did it! The 80/20 Rule was amusing and too true. Nooo I’m not going to explain it, rent the movie.

I missed Death At A Funeral when it was in the theater. It is a British comedy through & through. Not constant laughs but steady pacing the way the Brits like it. Chris & I loved it! Rent it immediately! I had originally wanted to see it because it looked funny and because Alan Tudyk is in it. I tend to follow actors from project to project: Firefly & Serenity as Wash, Dodgeball as Steve the Pirate, I Robot voice, Halo 3 voice, 3:10 to Yuma and now Death At A Funeral. He really gave his all as the poor slob who is "allergic" to Valium. I actually wish I had not seen the promos & trailers. The less you see coming the funnier it is. ENJOY!

I went and saw The Bank Job with my friend Didi (yea movies!)  We both enjoyed the film. It is based on a true story of the odd happenings in the early 70's. These events all collide to make a pretty good flick. I feel no need to explain or give away the plot. It is worth seeing. If you are still unsure about the movie, go at a bargain hour. It is worth paying actual money for, despite the fact that Jason Statham never takes his shirt off :-(
